- Format it to FAT32.
- Download Unetbootin from http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net

and config the BIOS into first boot is USB…
and, i restart it again…
and bactrack5 not bootable, still windows…
Let’s be honest here; if you can’t get this to work for you, then you don’t really need to be using backtrack.
yes lets be honest. Backtrack is a point and click , don’t flatter yourself.
Let’s be honest here; you don’t really know the power of BackTrack…
loool
I tried the Unetbootin method too, and have no luck , it boots up till it gets to the red backround and then the USB stops loading. Tried it with different ISOs and still no luck, but when i burn to a CD works just fine.
Update your BIOS, I had issues booting USB and updated BIOS…now all works
Did you took a look at the boot flag? Has to be set so it can boot at bios startup.
press f8 and select USB
First format USB to FAT32 and after try to install backtrack on it.
i have the same problem but i will try thanks Encrypted
It worked for me guys!
I still have the same problem to follow this instruction, but I make it work by using ultraiso.
Any ideas?
mine loads backtrack 5 but stops at line:
[ 6.956100] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Attached SCSI disk
and then it freezes there. was it suppose to be like that?
dudes you don’t have to download any program to burn it into your usb. . just open up your ms-dos and write down these commands:
>diskpart (new command window will be opened)
>list disk (this will give some numbers to your drivers. You most probably understand which driver is your usb)
>select disk # of your usb
>clean
>create partition primary
>select partition 1
>format fs=fat32
>assign
>exit
if u want to format your usb without command promt, you can right click on your driver and select format. uncheck quick format and select fat32, and then click on format button.. i write these down maybe some of you are in trouble with bootable formating..
if there are two directories namely bt5 and boot, you dont need to any program to burn your usb. copy those two and past into the usb, open up boot directory and double click on boot.dat =) and then restart your computer boot it, enjoy it.. thats all i know, i wanted to share . .
I did not want to use unetbootin, and so this is how I installed Backtrack to thumb:
1. Get slax as an ISO (yes, it’s not BT, but it makes configuring things much faster)
2. Mount/Open the SLAX ISO, dump the files onto your thumb, run the “boot/bootinst.sh” or “bootinst.bat” script (linux or DOS/Win respective scripts)
3. Open the BT5 ISO, dump the files onto your thumb
4. Overwrite the isolinux/isolinux.cfg file into the boot/slax.cfg file (yes, I could explain how to put in the slax entries, but we’re going for fast and dirty here).
5. Get rid of Slax folders (except the “boot” folder!) if you don’t want it.
6. Done.
This worked for me. I make no guarantees it’ll work for anyone else. I’ve been playing around with slax and bt for a little while, if you know how syslinux and isolinux works, this is all pretty straightforward if you want slax and bt to play nice. The key is BT5 folders have to all reside on the root of the thumb drive (unless you’re willing to modify the various initrd cpio files in casper/. I’m not. I haven’t found any documentation (let alone good docs) on how to do non-unetbootin (a nasty hack IMHO) BT5 on thumb, so that’s the only reason I’m giving mediocre directions here.
Did somebody try and succeed in Mac? I failed to find USB drive in a boot selection screen comes up with pressing ‘opt’.
Works fine with MAC 10.6
Plug in your USB, open system preferences select the USB as boot device then reboot. It will not work with the option key.

ok’ work for me! but where is the wifi? how do i install my wireless adapter? my wireless adapter is atheros’,,need HELP in here.
problem SOLVE!
For everyone having problems with installing BT5 there may be a more simple solution. I used UNetbootin because i had success with installing XP on a flash drive but what i ran into with BT5 was UNetbootin wasn’t extracting all the files. Easy fix were to extract the files that UNetbootin wasn’t extracting, mainly the files in isolinux and preseeed. If these folders are empty, then that is probably where the problem lies. I used ISO Buster and dragged the files from ISO Buster to the corresponding folders. Hope this helps.
Powerfull tool
Like it so much … and have no probs to install on UBS Drive with Unetbootin
ty so much
For people having trouble with BT5 Not booting from your USB, like i did.
try using “Universal USB installer” it work wonders for me
if it still doesn’t work then then see if you have an option to boot from a specified drive at startup then choose your usb Drive
Hope this helps

Hi
Related with your post, I have written a post: “Install backtrack 5 in your hard drive from Windows (or linux)”: http://www.iniqua.com/2011/11/17/instalando-backtrack-5-en-nuestro-disco-duro-desde-windows/?lang=en
I hope you find it useful.

Nice tutorial Dani, you are welcome.

How to solve this?

and it said “Could not find kernel image : vesamenu.c32″ when i using universal usb installer
Please help …
IDK about you guys, but i tried a different method. I used RMPrepUSB instead with the help of virtual clone drive. Alot more steps than this, but this method gave me no issues. Maybe for those of you having problems and trying to accomplish the task of making a successful bootable drive, should try this method instead. You will need to download RMPrep and Virtual Clone Drive, and you will need to locate the Menu list info on google to create it successfully.
OoO.Men i cant write on english very (well-good),but can you tell whats is that wo can instal other operation systeem on my flash memory and that should run on my (portable compter)—-PC.You can write me only in that page thank yu evrybody.
After insalling BT5 r1 so USB witn unetbootin in win 7, I boot and grub trys to start BT from CDROM, I changed “cdrom” by “usb” in syslinux.cfg and in isolinuxlcfg and came up to the # prompt, but I’m unable to install drivers, I’ll try your sggestions above.
to install ANY linux distro, all you have to do is:
1
get a copy .iso of the linux distribuition you want to install
2
get Yumi multiboot or LiLi Linux
3
Big enough pen (>8gb recommended)
4
COMMON SENSE
You combine these four things and its almost always fool-proof.
-You download LiLi LINUX, run it, formatting the pen you want to use, let it install the O.S. and give it some persistence.
-remove the pen, boot your pc up, and enter the bios. you command the pc to BOOT from USB device.
-INSERT PEN
-Reboot
-if you followed these tasks, BT5 loading screen should appear. choose the mode you want, when logon screen appears, type in startx.
-if you choose persistence mode, you cannot do system updates or else you wont be able to boot back in persistence mode. in fact, i dont recommend using persistence mode, because you wont be able do save anything. if you must/need, use another usb pen as your hard-drive. it’ll save you a lot of headaches.
-with yumi multi-boot you can have as many distros as you want, as long as you have pen space 4all.
hope this helped

IF ANYONE IS USING UNETBOOTIN ON WINDOWS IT HAS A 70% CHANCE OF NOT WORKING. IF YOU HAVE UBUNTU 12.04 JUST GET THE STARTUP DISK CREATOR AND LINUX CAN HANDLE THE FILE BETTER. Srry bout the caps
